December 5th, 2006so i’m in wal-mart the other day and this person hands me this free sample of sunsilk shampoo. and like a typical desi (indian/pakistani/bangladeshi/sri lankan) i can’t refuse anything for free and take this sample home. i get home and take a closer look at this free merchandise i just picked up and notice something peculiarly different about it. something so quaint i have to read it over and over again just to make sure i was reading what i thought i was reading. here, take a look:

So? Notice anything different?!?!? Although it shouldn’t be a surprise to me considering all the ads on TV in hindi from the likes of retailers such as Wal-Mart (and no, i don’t watch any indian shows on TV, my parents do), i still couldn’t yet fathom how the marketing concept behind hair shampoo could be targeting the East Indian community by using the urdu/hindi language!!! It was definitely a first for me and might be for you as well. At the same time, it yet again brings attention to the fact that the East Indian community is growing ever so large within the GTA and is not a segment of the population which anyone can ignore.
More importantly, however, it brings attention to the fact that there is help out there for those desi women who have ‘pak-puf’. You know, that poofy style hair they seem to think is in style not only in Mumbai, Karachi and Dhaka, but all around the world? One word: Anti-Poof!!!
Sunsilk is an Indian shampoo…I used it whenever I went to India and its incredible! They finally brought it to Canada about six months ago and its the greatest thing since sliced bread! Tell every girl you know!

Unfortunately Sunsilk isn’t indian. It’s made by UniLever which is north american. It’s popular in South Asia though…. just like Bata is so big there you’d think they’re an Indian company (but they’re not either)….

Can I make a confession? I got duped into buying this!!! Well not the desi-version at Wal-Mart (I’ve yet to see that anywher), but the regular kind because of all the other ads they play 24 hours a day on TBS (I love Seinfeld reruns…). I figure there may be something to it so I got a yellow “anti-flat” version…no idea if it worked. But it was cheaper than other stuff I buy and my hair is clean and ’seedha-sadha’ enough so a job well done.
Rehan, maybe the person who handed you the sample is trying to tell you something about your hair?
